Description | A two day course, on consecutive days, to cover the aetiology, assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning for periodontal conditions. Day 1 will start with a presentation on periodontal diagnosis, followed by groupwork ( in groups of 3 or 4 ) on cases with diagnostic dilemmas or problems, followed by risk factors and more complex cases. There will be an interactive exercise on the assessment of prognosis for individual teeth, with photographs and radiographs for each group. Day 2 will cover evidence relating to assessment of prognosis before discussing treatment planning in detail. There will be a series of mini presentations interspersed with discussions on case histories and practical sessions.Topics will also include bacterial biofilms, importance of self-performed plaque control and patient motivation | ||||

Aims | Day 1 to appreciate the range of periodontal conditions that require treatment and those that do not. to understand the principal aetiological and risk factors involved in the development of periodontal diseases. to understand the importance of screening and assessment for periodontal disease in general dental practice. to understand the value and limitations of periodontal probing. Day 2 to appreciate the range of treatment options available for periodontal diseases. to understand when new treatment techniques, such as regeneration, can be used. to be able to deliver oral hygiene effectively. to be able to take consistent digital images. | ||||
Objectives | Day 1 - the course should enable participants to: diagnose periodontal diseases accurately and effectively. use BPE as a fast and effective screening tool. use periodontal probing more effectively. assess patients' level of risk for periodontitis accurately.
