DescriptionIncreasing numbers of people are experiencing dementia. This webinar aims to familiarise the dental team with recognising and understanding dementia. It will focus on helping participants to gain insight into the condition and develop confidence to support people living with dementia. We will be joined by Katy Kerr, current chair of the Dementia Friendly Dentistry Group who will share her experience and expertise in the field of dementia friendly dentistry.

Aims

The overall aim is aligned with Government health policy that enables older people to remain independent for longer by providing preventative oral healthcare and access to treatment that is appropriate for the individual.  The course will provide an overview of programmes for dementia friendly dentistry.

Objectives
  • Gain insight into the viewpoint of someone living with dementia and the issues relating to providing their dental care including ethico-legal and safeguarding perspectives
  • Discover help and tips on how to treat people with dementia including modification of the practice environment and patient management
  • Share idea and good practice and signposting to useful resources
Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Explain what is meant by the term dementia and what actions individuals can take to reduce their risk of dementia, or to delay the onset
  • Demonstrate recognition of the needs of those living with dementia so as to provide safe, dignified and compassionate care
  • Make adjustments to practice to support older people including those living with dementia by assisting the development of supportive care environments
