Prof Chapple will guide us in examining the economic and societal burden of periodontitis, refreshing our knowledge of periodontal classification, diagnosis and evidence based therapy, exploring the role of nutrition in periodontitis development and treatment, and discussing the nature of peri-implant diseases and how to manage them using an evidence-based approach.

Aims

  • To demonstrate the nature of peri-implant diseases and how to manage them using an evidence-based approach.
Objectives
  • To understand how to rapidly and simply classify periodontitis and arrive at a diagnosis.
  • To understand S3-level clinical guidelines and how they work and can be applied in the NHS.
  • To demonstrate how poor diet and nutrition drives periodontal inflammation and how good nutrition can help restore health
  • To explain the nature of peri-implant diseases and give insights into the latest S3-level guideline on managing these conditions
Learning outcomes

After this course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Appreciate the burden of periodontitis on humankind
  2. Learn the difference between disease classification and diagnosis
  3. Learn how to undertake periodontal treatment in the NHS system
  4. Understand the impact of nutrition upon periodontal inflammation
  5. Be able to confidently discuss and explain to patients the relative benefits of retaining teeth versus having implants, and what the options are for managing peri-implant diseases.
