DescriptionAre you a dental nurse looking to develop your preventive skills and gain confidence in delivering topical fluoride applications? Join our Topical Fluoride Application Training Programme, designed to support dental nurses in developing the knowledge and practical skills required to undertake this important preventive intervention. This initial online webinar on 15 October will provide an overview of the course, explain what to expect throughout the programme, and outline the requirements for successful completion. During the webinar, delegates will receive a workbook which must be completed and submitted to harriet.buleysnell@nhs.net by 5:00pm on Wednesday 28 October. To be recognised as a Confident Beginner, participants must attend both components of the programme: Online introductory webinar: 15 October Practical study day: Saturday 7 November at HSU, Bournemouth Attendance at both sessions, together with completion of the workbook, is essential to achieve the learning outcomes and gain the maximum benefit from the training. Aims

To equip dental nurses with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to safely and effectively apply topical fluoride varnish as part of evidence-based preventive oral healthcare, working within their scope of practice and in accordance with current legislation, national guidance, and local protocols.

Objectives

At the end of all the sessions dental nurses should be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the GDC standards guidance and scope of practice, in relation to additional skills carried out by a dental nurse. This includes an understanding of professionalism, ethics, checking a medical history, patient consent and confidentially.
  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of evidence based oral health messages of the content and application of delivering better oral health (2025) and how these are delivered to patients.
  • demonstrate an understanding of intra and extra anatomy, physiology and pathology in relation to the safe application of topical fluoride
  • describe the caries process and the effect of topical fluoride on the tooth surface.
  • describe the risks benefits and contraindications in the use of topical fluoride including referral to other dental and health and social care professionals
  • demonstrate the practical and patient management skills required for the safe application of topical fluoride varnish
Learning outcomes

By the end of the programme, delegates will feel confident to apply topical fluoride varnish as a safe beginner and feel able to progress to completing a log book of 10 patients in their practice.
