DescriptionJoin us for an evening exploring the latest evidence and guidance on antimicrobial prescribing, resistance and stewardship with Dr Nikolai Stankiewicz and Liam Shaw. Nikolai is the dental representative for the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Antimicrobial Stewardship Collaboration and will lead us in considering the dental team's role in protecting patients from antibiotic resistance, explore our options for prescribing in practice and identify resources for delivering antimicrobial stewardship in practice. This lecture will be based on the latest regulations, guidance and prescriber competency framework for antimicrobial prescribing. Liam is a biologist at the University of Bristol who is researching the evolution and spread of antibiotic resistance and is the author of the recently published 'Dangerous Miracle - A Natural History of Antibiotics - and how we burned through them'.

Aims

To increase delegate's awareness of the use of antimicrobials in dentistry and enhance understanding of the history of antibiotics and the emerging global challenge of antibiotic resistance.

Objectives

1. Explain the evidence behind dental prescribing

2. List the regulations and guidance available for antibiotic prescribing in dentistry

3. Identify appropriate situations for prescribing antimicrobials in general dental practice

4. Recognise the national toolkit for the use of antibiotics in urgent dental care

5. Recognise the historical development of antibiotics and their impact on dentistry and wider healthcare

6. Examine the evolution and drivers of antibiotic resistance

7. Understand the current burden of antibiotic resistance globally and it's relevance to dental practice

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session, delegates will feel confident in the appropriate use of antimicrobials in general dental practice and have an understanding of how antibiotic resistance develops and why it poses a significant global threat.
