These are some encounters you may face on a regular basis:

The angry and verbally abusive patient in the Emergency Department.

The patient who repeatedly DNA’s clinic appointments and is discharged back to the GP.

The "frequent flyer" to ED or GP.

The patient who ‘did not wait to be seen’.

This regional training day challenges you to look beyond these labels and to consider the social, economic and environmental factors that shape a patient's health and the way they engage with healthcare.

Through a diverse programme of talks delivered by experts in homeless health, substance misuse, public health, primary care and obstetrics and gynaecology, you'll gain a deeper understanding of health inequalities and the experiences of vulnerable patient groups in the South West.

Whatever your future specialty, you'll leave feeling better equipped to provide compassionate and equitable care to patients whose lives have been shaped by significant adversity.

By the end of the teaching day, you will be able to:

· Describe key concepts underpinning health inequalities, including the wider determinants of health, the Inverse Care Law, the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD), and the difference between equality and equity.

· To explore how different life circumstances influence health behaviours, access to healthcare, patterns of disease, engagement with services, and long-term health outcomes.

· Recognise the diverse geography and different population health needs across the Southwest, including the challenges faced by rural and coastal communities.

· Understand the principles of trauma-informed care.

· Recognise that vulnerable and marginalised groups may face multiple barriers to accessing healthcare and identify practical ways healthcare professionals can help reduce these barriers.

Develop greater awareness of the health needs of people experiencing homelessness and understand why additional flexibility, advocacy and support may be required to achieve more equitable health outcomes.

This course links with the following Foundation Professional Capabilities (FPCs):

(FPC1) Recognise vulnerable individuals including those at risk of abuse or exploitation, and demonstrate appropriate consideration of safeguarding issues.

(FPC3, 4, 13) Consider the variation in healthcare delivery and the needs of different populations across the UK, and endeavour to ensure Foundation Doctors are equipped to work in different areas of the UK by highlighting different presentations and prevalence of disease in different populations.

(FPC4) Actively seek opportunities for health promotion and/or demonstrate a commitment to improving population health and resolving health inequality.

(FPC6) Liaises with agencies outside the employing organisation and, where necessary, outside healthcare to ensure biopsychosocial needs, including the safeguarding of vulnerable patients, are met".
