Aims | Aims: 1. To provide FY2s with systems-based (breathing/circulation/disability) knowledge of common pathologies unwell children may present with, including important factors to consider in how a child's presentation may differ from an adult's. 2. To provide a safe opportunity for FY2s to assess an 'unwell child' using a systems-based (breathing/circulation/disability) approach, with a focus on early recognition. 3. To deepen FY2s' understanding of the importance of good communication in relation to communicating with parents and escalation of care to senior clinicians. 4. To discuss the importance of safeguarding children and young people and FY2s' role in this. |
Objectives | These are slightly variable for each simulation scenario, but overall the themes are: 1. Effective history taking/communication of concern about child to parent(s) 2. A – E assessment of child – including basic interventions (oxygen/fluid bolus/antibiotic prescribing) 3. Early recognition of unwell child, with reference to relevant system (B-D) 4. Escalation of concern/child's care to to senior(s)/specialist team – using structured SBAR format |
