Aims

The course will aim to support foundation doctors in their rotations by providing them with an opportunity to develop psychiatric skills which they can apply to practice across a variety of settings including GP, ED and ward SHO jobs.

Objectives

Small Group Discussions

· Identify and share personal learning objectives related to psychiatric skills or communication, based on prior Foundation training experiences and perceived learning needs, and in the context of exploring these objectives in discussion with an Expert by Experience 

· Reflect on and articulate personal responses to challenging clinical interactions and workplace stress.

· Identify personal learning objectives related to wellbeing, based on prior Foundation training experiences and perceived learning needs.

· Recognise the emotional and psychological impact of Foundation training and share common challenges in a supported, facilitated peer environment.

“History Taking and Patient Relations”

· Describe the key components of a psychiatric history and mental state examination relevant to Foundation-level practice.

· Explain how communication skills influence the quality and safety of psychiatric assessment in time-pressured, non-psychiatric clinical settings.

· Recognise common communication challenges encountered during psychiatric history taking and assessment.

Lived Experience Session

· Approach lived experience narratives in way which moves beyond information-gathering or diagnostic framing.

· Respond to peer and lived experience contributions in a manner that maintains psychological safety within a facilitated group setting.

· Engage in facilitated dialogue that incorporates peer and lived experience perspectives to deepen understanding of complex clinical situations and integrate these perspectives into future approaches to communication and relationship-building.
