Lecturer profile | Harrie Harrison has been a Social Worker for 29 years working as a specialist within the fields of substance misuse (drugs and alcohol) and mental health. He has worked in Manchester with the country’s first “street agency” (Lifeline) and in London with homeless drug and alcohol users to assist these very chaotic individuals into residential rehab. He has also worked on every CDT and Alcohol Team across Cheshire and been involved in setting up specialist services as well as being a SW practitioner. Harrie is also involved in supporting carers of individuals who are misusing substances and undertaking carer assessments. He also does work directly with individuals including methadone prescribing, harm reduction, safer using, detox and rehab programmes, day-recovery services and crisis interventions. Harrie has also been a member of a “Dual Diagnosis” Team working directly with individuals with mental health and substance misuse difficulties. This service received national recognition by Dept of Health “Good Practice Guidelines”. He has also worked on a mental health Assertive Outreach Team working with individuals who are reluctant to engage with more conventional mental health services. Harrie has been an AMHP (Approved Mental Health Practitioner) for the past 15 years. This role means he attends with GPs/Psychiatrists to assess individuals under the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act and for possible admission to hospital. Harrie has been a Guest Lecturer in Substance Misuse and Dual Diagnosis at a number of universities including Keele, Chester and Liverpool for regular sessions with SW/Nursing students. He also trains “in house” for SSD Depts across Cheshire/Shropshire/North Wales in both substance misuse and mental health. He also does regular sessions for SW’s who are training to become AMHPs. Harrie also does training sessions for other professional agencies including police, dentists, nursing, carers, etc.
