A brief historical context, reasons why people use, the language of drug use, areas that drugs use can impact on, set and setting theory, addiction, the misuse of drugs act and drug absorption times, risk assessment and capacity, treatment, care support and carers support. Drugs and Usage, The signs & effects.

I will cover all drugs following clarification of the families of drugs. This will include Alcohol, Heroin, Methadone et al (including recent trends in government Policy-Peer Support and Recovery), Cannabis, Cocaine and Crack Cocaine, Hallucinogenic, MDMA and legal highs (and the Psychoactive Substance Act 2016) and possibly solvents.

Aims
  • To present a session using PowerPoint and discussion to inform and educate dental attendees on the complex world of substance misuse (including alcohol)
Objectives
  • To enable attendees to have a better understanding of substance misuse customers within the surgery environment and latest drug use trends.
  • To have an understanding of the various illicit drugs and what they look like how used etc. plus signs and symptoms of intoxication drug use and how this will present within the surgery.
  • Discussion of ensuring better surgery attendance tips and potential issues around 'capacity' with intoxicated patients.
  • To enable an understanding of the interlocking systems that may be involved with an individual patient and how other agencies work with the individual.
  • What treatment options are available to an individual drug user in the community and recent trends in treatment.
  • To enable attendees to overall increase their understanding of this complex and often misunderstood area of life and why individuals may misuse substances to a very destructive and chaotic level.

  • Increase knowledge in the area of substance misuse and to gain a better understanding of the various drugs used and their respective effects and risks.
