This year's focus will be on oral health provision for those who are most vulnerable in our communities. Come and hear experts in their field provide advice on:

  • Consent and Mental Capacity
  • Prevention

  • To describe the possible role of Oral Bacteria in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.

  • To discuss issues and treatment relating to incisor opacities in young patients

  • To raise awareness of prevetion for vulnerable group

Oral Bacteria. A threat to the Blood Brain Barrier?

  • To provide research evidence to show how oral bacteria may access brain tissue by damaging the blood brain barrier and thus expose cerebral tissues to their potent virulence factors.

Don’t get me wrong – reviewing core communication skills

  • Discuss with colleagues the importance of good communication skills in health care
  • Practice some key communication skills in a supportive environment

White patches and brown spots’: aesthetic management of incisor opacities in young patients

  • To review the aetiology, prevalence, diagnosis and management of developmental enamel defects in children, with a focus on aesthetic treatment of incisor opacities

Practical Aspects of Consent, Best Interests and Mental Capacity

  • To understand the principles of the MCA 2005
  • To gain confidence assessing capacity
  • To gain conference to undertake a best interest decision

The Importance of prevention for vulnerable people within society

  • To improve understanding of prevention barriers

Following the session attendees will have a greater understanding of how oral bacteria may access brain tissue by damaging the blood brain barrier

Following this lecture, attendees will:

  • Have an understanding the mechanisms that cause enamel hypomineralisation and hypoplasia
  • Appreciate the psychosocial impacts of visible enamel defects on children
  • Know what treatment options are available to improve the appearance of enamel opacities (tooth whitening, microabrasion, resin infiltration, composite resin).

Practical Aspects of Consent, Best Interests and Mental Capacity

Following the session attendees will:

  • Have a greater understanding of the Mental Capacity Act
  • Be able to assess capacity effectively and undertake a best interest decision

  • How to ID vulnerable groups
  • Barriers to attaining oral care
  • Alternative methods and adjuncts to receiving care
