Morning session for all

9:30am - 12:30pm - 'Starting Well' in Cheshire & Merseyside – Lesley Gough, Public Health England, Roger Hollins, Chair of Cheshire & Merseyside Local Dental Network & Clare Leddingham - Introducing a new local initiative being rolled out in your area.

Afternoon session

You will need to pick one topic each from session A & B:

Session A - 13:15 - 14:30pm

  • Safeguarding with Confidence – Glenys Hurst Robson - This course will give delegates an understanding of how to make parents aware of their safeguarding responsibilities, identify those children that are more at risk of abuse or neglect and how manage the difficult conversation with parents.

OR

  • Smoking & Dental Health - Samantha Thompson - This session will help delegates understand the effects Smoking has on the body including oral health and the benefits of quitting smoking and introduce local referral & sign-posting pathways. 

Session B - 14:45 - 16:00

  • How do patients assess you and what you are saying? - Mike Wanless - An interactive session looking at verbal and non verbal communication and how patients assess the dental team.

OR

  • Infection Control for the Dental Team  – Karen Jones - This session will provide an update on infection control practices relevant to dentistry encompassing relevant guidance and Legislation.

Aims

'Starting Well' in Cheshire & Merseyside

  • To update delegates on the national ‘Starting Well’ programme and describe the approach to adopting the programme across Cheshire and Merseyside.
  • To describe the potential role for primary dental care in improving the dental health of very young children

Safeguarding with Confidence

All dental professionals need to be able to be confident in managing conflict with parents and make safeguarding referrals to protect and safeguard children from abuse or neglect. This course will begin to increase confidence in utilising safeguarding procedures.

Smoking & Dental Health

To understand the effects Smoking has on the body including oral health and the benefits of quitting smoking. Professionals should also feel confident to ask patients their smoking status, offer very brief advice and refer to their local services.

How do patients assess you and what you are saying?

Delegates will learn how to communicate effectively with patients using verbal and nonverbal skills

Infection Control for the Dental Team

To give dental care professionals an update on infection control practices relevant to dentistry.

Objectives

'Starting Well' in Cheshire & Merseyside

  • Provide an update on dental health of young children in Cheshire and Merseyside
  • Ensure delegates are informed about support available to establish the programme and also ongoing support.

Safeguarding with Confidence

This session will:

  • Increase Parents awareness of the Safeguarding Responsibilities of Dental professionals
  • Look at why patients complain?
  • Discuss managing conflict situations with parents
  • Increase confidence in making safeguarding referrals

Smoking & Dental Health

To look at:

  • What is in a Cigarette including risks & effects of smoking
  • Local Statistics
  • Smoking and Oral Health
  • A dental professional’s role in Smoking Cessation
  • Signposting to Local Services & Referral Pathway

How do patients assess you and what you are saying?

Delegates will:

  • Be able to communicate effectively with patients
  • Understand the importance of non-verbal communication
  • Be aware of patients’ sensory preference

Infection Control & the Dental Team

  • Understanding of infection prevention and control specific to dentistry.
  • Understanding the importance of decontamination in the dental setting.
  • Update on Legislation, guidance and compliance requirements with reference to infection control.

Delegates will

  • Understand the rationale for the Starting Well programme both at a national level and local level in Cheshire and Merseyside
  • Be more aware of how the ‘Starting Well’ programme may be implemented in dental practices across Cheshire and Merseyside

Safeguarding with Confidence

This course will increase confidence in making safeguarding referrals and will help professionals develop strategies to manage the reality of discussing or seeking consent for referrals with parents.

Smoking & Dental Health

To be able to understand the health implications of smoking on the body, the benefits of quitting smoking, the support available and referral pathways in to Stop Smoking Services.

How do patients assess you and what you are saying?

Delegates will have:

  • The ability to communicate effectively with patients
  • Understanding the importance of non-verbal communication
  • Awareness of patients’ sensory preference

Infection Control for Dental Team

Delegates will be able to:

  • Apply safe practice within the dental setting with regards to infection prevention and control.
  • Identify the importance of decontamination including correct technique for hand hygiene.
  • Understanding of current infection control legislation, guidance and compliance requirements.
