The widespread and inappropriate use of antibiotics has been a key factor in the rise in bacterial resistance in the world population, resulting in the real possibility that we will run out of effective antibiotics to manage infection. This has been cited as a high priority by the World Health Organization (WHO) with discussions such as ‘Antibiotic resistance - a threat to global health security’ taking place in an attempt to address this key issue.

In dentistry we need to play our part by ensuring we use antibiotics appropriately. In this lecture I will look at how antimicrobial should be used in managing periodontal disease, and will aim to cover:

  • Background on antibiotics
  • Challenges of their use in the periodontal tissues
  • Modes of delivery (Systemic vs topical)
  • Indications for use including clinical scenarios
  • The latest European consensus statement on antibiotic use
  • Alternative therapies
