Aims

1. Provide oral surgery trainees a comprehensive overview of the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and surgical options to manage common malignancies of the head and neck, including hard tissue, soft tissue and salivary gland malignancies.

2. To give oral surgery trainees an understanding of the surgical treatment options including resection, neck dissection, and reconstructive surgery for malignancies of the head and neck.

3. Discuss the role of an oral surgeon in the management of patients with head and neck cancer from assessment and diagnosis to post-operative monitoring.

Objectives

By the end of this session, participants should be able to:

1. Describe the common malignant conditions affecting:

• Oral soft and hard tissues

• Salivary glands

• Cervical lymph nodes/Neck

2. Apply a systematic approach to assessment, investigation and diagnosis for patients with suspected head and neck cancer

3. Understand the TNM classification for oropharyngeal cancer and its relevance in surgical planning, including margins, indications for neck dissections and reconstructive options

4. Understand the follow up protocols for patients with head and neck cancer

Learning outcomes

Participants should feel more confident in applying a systematic approach in assessing and investigating a patient with suspected head and neck malignancy and be able to apply a diagnostic surgical sieve. They should have knowledge of the steps involved in the surgical work up for a patient, the surgical options and risks involved, and awareness of how TNM staging has an impact on the management of a patient and their follow up.
