Additional information | Mr Sami Stagnell graduated in Kings College London Dental Institute in 2009 and has since worked in practices across the South of England. After his undergraduate degree he worked as a Senior House Officer and Staff Grade in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Barts and The London NHS Trust and maintained posts with Kings College Lall ondon as a visiting Postgraduate Advisor (Consultancy) and Honorary Clinical Teacher at Kings College Hospital. He has gained his Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery with the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and holds membership of the Faculty of General Dentistry with the RCS England. He was awarded a merit in his MSc in Aesthetic Dentistry with Kings College London in 2015 and is completing an MSc with the University of Manchester in Skin Ageing and Aesthetic Medicine. He is an active member of many societies and represents the profession as the vice-chair of the Young Dentists Committee with the British Dental Association. Sami is currently on the Specialty Register for Oral Surgery and has completed training in hypnosis, CBT and sedation to help treat nervous and phobic patients. ​Following specialty training he was awarded one of the first UK posts as a Fellow in Clinical Leadership and Management with Health Education England, working with supporting national healthcare projects.

Aims | To enhance GDP confidence and competence in fundamental oral surgery skills. To provide hands-on, practical experience in key oral surgery techniques using pig jaws as a simulated clinical environment. To improve patient care by equipping dentists with essential skills for effective treatment planning, atraumatic tooth extractions, flap design, sectioning, and suturing. To address common challenges faced by GDPs in oral surgery and provide practical solutions to improve outcomes. |
Objectives | Treatment Planning Recognize cases suitable for management in primary care and identify those requiring referral. Apply appropriate risk assessment strategies and consent protocols for oral surgery procedures. Develop systematic approaches to assessing radiographs and other diagnostic tools. Flap Design and Suturing Understand the principles of flap design, including different types of incisions and their indications. Practice creating mucoperiosteal flaps with confidence using pig jaws. Demonstrate proficiency in basic and advanced suturing techniques, including interrupted and continuous sutures, ensuring optimal healing outcomes. Tooth Sectioning Understand the principles of sectioning teeth as part of surgical extractions. Gain hands-on experience in sectioning molar teeth and removing roots safely and efficiently using pig jaws. Instrument Handling Become familiar with a range of oral surgery instruments, their uses, and maintenance. Improve ergonomic handling techniques to ensure precision and reduce fatigue during procedures. Complications Management Identify common intra-operative and post-operative complications and develop strategies for effective management. Learn techniques for minimizing patient discomfort and reducing the risk of complication |
