Aims

1. To improve the dental management of patients with medical problems that may be encountered in daily practice.

2. To improve the use of antibiotic therapy.

Objectives

1. To examine aspects of general medicine and surgery of relevance to the practice of dentistry.

2. To discuss the dental management of medically compromised patients and provide guidance in the proper and judicious use of antibiotic therapy.

Learning outcomes

Following this course learners should be able to:

1. Outline effective strategies for managing potential complications in medically compromised patients.

2. Recognise how a patient’s disease/medical condition can impact their physiology and response to dental treatment, and use antimicrobials effectively to treat infections and minimise the spread of resistant organisms.
