Sandra specialises in Dental Infection Control and carries out audits and training for dental providers and their support staff. Sandra has been involved in incident investigations and provides technical advice on practice layout and design as well as compliance with national infection control and decontamination guidance. Sandra started her career as a Dental Nurse in 1994 and has worked in both NHS and private dental practices. She was appointed Senior Dental Nurse for Wandsworth PCT in 2001 responsible for running the communicable disease dental clinic. Sandra also has worked as a bank inspector for the Care Quality Commission.

This course is suitable for the entire dental team and includes an update in working post COVID-19. *PLEASE NOTE THIS COURSE WILL NOW RUN AS A WEBINAR VIA 'ZOOM' PLATFORM.

Aims

To reduce the occurrence of infectious diseases in the dental surgery. To explore the CQC's new approach to dental inspections and guidance for dental services in working within the CQC guidleines.

Objectives

1. To explain the stages of the decontamination process as identified in the HTM 01-05 guidance document and discuss safe management of healthcare waste in the dental sector.

2. To examine the HTM 01-05 guidance document and discuss how key environmental legislation applies to dentistry.

3. To provide information and advice on how the Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulates and inspects health and social care services, setting out the principles and the new operating model.

4. To consider the impact on dental services.

Learning outcomes

1. Describe and summarise key stages of the decontamination process, and implement effective infection control procedures to reduce the risks of cross-infection.

2. Outline essential and best quality requirements of the HTM 01-05 guidelines, assess own practice level of compliance and identify areas for improvement.

3. Demonstrate recognition of effective measures to manage the risk of physical, chemical and microbiological contamination in the practice of dentistry.

4. Outline effective strategies for safely maintaining dental unit waterlines and summarise the key issues relating to waste disposal in dental practice, assess own practice level of compliance and identify areas for improvement.

5. Gain an understanding of the new operating model, recall the key five domains for registration and future inspections to update your practice model.
