Sandra Smith originally qualified as a dental nurse, and has an Honours BSc Degree in Health Protection. She has been working in the Infection Control industry since 2004. She has worked for a number of Primary Care Trusts and also for the London Deanery. Sandra is experienced in helping organisations develop quality infection control systems and processes to provide effective assurance about good practice. She also has extensive experience in auditing and delivering infection control training to a wide variety of audiences.

Aims

To reduce the occurrence of infectious diseases in the dental surgery.

Objectives

1. To explain the stages of the decontamination process as identified in the HTM 01-05 guidance document.

2. To examine the HTM 01-05 guidance document and discuss how key environmental legislation applies to dentistry.

3. To discuss infection risk reduction.

4. To describe the control of Legionellae in the dental practice.

5. To discuss the safe management of healthcare waste in the dental sector as specified in the HTM 01-07 guidance document.
