DescriptionThis course offers a range of ideas and practical elements aimed at managing and preventing back pain. Dr Gerry Gallacher is a dual qualified dentist and osteopath who understands the highly specific nature of dental care, and the demands which it places on the spine. This course is suitable for the entire practice team, but particularly those directly treating and assisting in the clinical care of patients.

Gerry Gallacher is a dual qualified dentist and osteopath. He is uniquely placed to understand the highly specific area of our job and the demands which it places on the spine, and to give advice on back pain.
Qualifying as a dentist in Dundee, he has over 20 years of wide experience of general practice, hospital and community dental services.
Gerry studied at the British School of Osteopathy, to pursue a lifelong interest in sports and musculoskeletal injuries, qualifying with a BSc (Hons) in Osteopathy in 1998. Since 2001, Gerry has worked as an Osteopath at the University of Bristol Sports Medicine Clinic.
His aim is to help dentists to keep working and enjoying life, free from the burden of back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders.

Please note that whilst Dr Gallacher can answer generic questions , advice that would amount to personal consultations is not possible.

Aims

The aim of this course is to reduce the impact of back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders in dentists and other dental professionals who directly treat patients, or are involved in patient care. 

Objectives
  1. To describe the latest clinical evidence on back pain investigation and management
  2. To discuss common causes of back pain
  3. To review clinical anatomy that relates to back care
  4. To demonstrate and practise a range of exercises that can help prevent and manage back pain, including how to stretch and strengthen the spine, and how to manage tight muscles
  5. To consider and analyse ergonomic factors in dentistry as they relate to back care, including seating options
  6. To compare treatment options for back care and back pain
Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. recognise why and how back pain affects those who work in dentistry
  2. analyse the impact of back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders in their working environment
  3. identify suitable back care exercises, and their role in managing one's own health
  4. perform a range of back exercises, so as to reduce the risks and consequences of back pain
  5. appraise ergonomic aspects of their practice that impact on back care and health
  6. assess treatment options for back care and back pain
