DescriptionThis theory and practical course meets the annual GDC requirements for CPD in medical emergencies and follows the UK Resuscitation Council guidelines in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Immediate Life Support (ILS). Suitable for all members of the dental team. There will be a chance to practice/demonstrate practical BLS skills in the afternoon.*Please bring a small cushion or small mat for your knees if taking part in the practical session. GDC outcomes A, B & C.

Lynn Fox has been a Registered General Nurse for over 25 years in cardiac & intensive care, emergency triage and for 11 years as a senior resuscitation officer for the NHS. In this latter SRO role she prepared and supported clinical staff in the prevention of patient deterioration and also management of cardiac arrests. Lynn is a Resuscitation Council accredited instructor in advanced adult and paediatric life support including Immediate Life Support. Lynn regularly teaches dental medical emergencies and BLS to dental practices in-house and has also lectured on anaphylaxis for the BDA conference and also on medical emergency drugs in the CPD theatre at the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show 2018. Lynn has developed and regularly teaches conscious sedation immediate life support courses for the dental team. This includes the management of common sedation, medical and dental emergencies. 

Registration/Tea/Coffee is 09:00 to 09.15 with the educational programme starting at 09.15. There is a short mid morning tea/coffee break and lunch break at 12.30 (*Please note lunch is not provided, you are welcome to bring lunch or food can be purchased nearby).  The afternoon session is practicing practical skills in BLS and use of AED. Aims

The aim of this course is to develop the learner's ability to recognise, assess and manage medical emergencies - adults and paediatrics - in the primary care dental Setting.

Objectives

1. To provide training in how to perform an urgent care assessment of an ill patient.

2. To outline the processes and procedures to recognise, manage and where required provide, basic and immediate life support for medical emergencies.

3. To outline the emergency drugs and equipment that should be held by dental surgeries.

4. To explain the team approach to medical emergencies.

Learning outcomes

1. Identify medical emergencies which are beyond own scope of management, so as refer with an appropriate degree of urgency when necessary.

2. Recognise, manage and provide basic  and immediate life support for medical emergencies in line with UK Resuscitation Council guidelines.

3. Identify, prescribe and administer - where appropriate - emergency drugs correctly.

4. Facilitate a team approach to medical emergencies so as to deal promptly with uncommon but potentially tragic events.
