Lecturer profileJoss started her dental career in the Royal Navy in 1987. She qualified as a dental hygienist at RADC Aldershot in 1992 and was fortunate to have the opportunity to work in many locations in UK and abroad including Gibraltar, Hong Kong and Hawaii. During her 9 years’ service Joss was privileged to work with many specialists and gain experience in many areas of dentistry. Joss moved to Gloucestershire in 1999 and has been part of the lovely team working at Confident Dental and Implant Clinic in Stroud, Gloucestershire since 2007. In 2018 Joss won Dental Hygienist of the Year.
Joss is a clinical ambassador for the Mouth Cancer Foundation and is joined the dental team caring for head and neck cancer patients at Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals in 2020. Joss was kindly invited by BSDHT to be a working party member updating the PHE DBOH guidelines in the prevention and early detection of mouth cancer. Joss is part of the United Kingdom Oral Management in Cancer care group (UKOMIC) and has recently been invited to be a part of the consensus group with the World Dental Federation (FDI) to help with the development of an interprofessional course to improve the mouth care of cancer patients.
Her interest in helping cancer patients with their dental care before, during and after treatment has been a journey encouraged by family, friends and patients and with expert help from specialists.
Joss has been published in many medical and dental publications. She speaks nationally to dental, medical and patient groups to help drive for a more collaborative holistic approach for the ongoing mouth care of patients living with cancer. After her successful charity fundraising conference in 2019, “Talking Mouths Talking Cancer Care”, she is determined to make this an annual event in different areas of the country with passionate professionals presenting topics relating to cancer care.
Joss is currently studying an MSc in Advanced and Specialist Healthcare with the University of Kent.
