| Availability | Course has taken place |
| Subject | Restorative |
| Description | This one-day course is designed to provide information and provoke discussion on the diagnosis of dental caries and its management. |
| Additional information | Dental caries is one of the most common diseases of mankind, second in prevalence only to the common cold. It is a multifactorial disease occurring in plaque. The formation of carious lesions can be controlled by oral hygiene with a fluoride toothpaste, additional fluoride in some cases, and a sensible diet limiting sugar intake. Established lesions can be arrested although cavities that cannot be cleaned should be restored. In multi-medicated older people with dry mouths, caries is more difficult to control. Caries also poses a greater problem in socio-economically disadvantaged people, through deprivation and a lack of education. Caries management for older and/or socially deprived people presents its own challenges. The day will provide an insight into the various techniques which may be employed to detect early caries, how to monitor such lesions and when to restore the tooth with a filling. New and existing techniques for removing caries will be evaluated and the role of adhesive restorative materials will be explored. Attendees should be able to take away specific practical advice that will assist them to successfully manage patients in their care. This course is suitable for General Dental Practitioners and Dental therapists |
