Debbie started her career in dentistry as a Dental Nurse in 1996, working in general dental practice, and subsequently qualified as a Dental Therapist in 2008. Debbie has worked in a mixture of NHS, private, and community dental services. She is now a full-time Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy, teaching undergraduate Dental Therapists, Hygienists, and Nurses. Debbie has completed a PG Certificate in Higher Education Teaching and Learning and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Aims

To enhance the clinician’s ability to accurately diagnose and classify periodontal diseases in accordance with current evidence-based guidelines.

To introduce MINST in the non-surgical management of periodontal conditions within the scope of hygienists and therapists.

To promote critical thinking and patient-centred care in the long-term management and prevention of periodontal disease.

Objectives

Systematically assess periodontal health, including comprehensive charting, risk factor identification, and interpretation of clinical and radiographic findings.

Formulate and implement appropriate non-surgical periodontal treatment plans, including instrumentation, patient education, and behaviour modification strategies.

Evaluate treatment outcomes and design effective supportive periodontal care (SPC) programmes tailored to individual patient needs.

Learning outcomes

Critically assess and diagnose periodontal conditions using comprehensive clinical examination, periodontal charting, and interpretation of radiographic findings in line with current classification systems.

Design and deliver evidence-based non-surgical periodontal treatment plans, incorporating effective instrumentation techniques, risk factor management, and patient-centred education strategies.

Evaluate periodontal treatment outcomes and justify ongoing maintenance strategies, including the development of personalised supportive periodontal care programmes based on patient risk and disease stability.
