DescriptionA blend of theory and practice to refresh and improve your management of deep caries & placement of posterior composites, and your communication with patients about their posterior restoration treatment options. The day includes an overview of the theory of composite selection and placement and a practical opportunity to prepare and fill posterior plastic teeth in phantom heads.

Mr Neil Nathwani is Associate Clinical Professor in restorative dentistry at the Eastman Dental Institute. He is the Deputy Programme Director of the Restorative Dental Practice MSc at the Eastman. Neil has worked in both NHS and private practice for the last 16 years and currently works in specialist practices where he accepts referrals from general dental practitioners. He was a specialist clinical tutor at Guys and St Thomas hospital for 3 years prior to his current UCL Eastman post. Neil played an active role in teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates. Neil currently teaches postgraduates on the MSc course as well as other short courses.

Start time : 09:15

Timings for the morning break, 45 minute lunchbreak and a very short afternoon break will be determined by the needs of the attendees.

Reflection and evaluation: 16:15. End of day :16:30

***Refreshments and lunch are not provided; these can be purchased in the nearby hospital cafes, or you may bring your own which can be consumed in the PGC atrium.

The John Lister PGC is at Entrance 4 (SL2 4HL) Maternity/ Paeds. of Wexham Park Hospital, and NOT the main entrance- go straight ahead to Car Park C, then walk to a low brown bricked 60s type building in a hollow on the right as you drive in. You need to pay for parking: £9.50 for the day. NB It can take over 30 minutes to cross Slough from the M4 junction 6. If arriving by train, please allow at least 30 minutes travel from Slough station. There is a local bus, but taxi will be far quicker.

Aims

The aim of this course is to improve management of deep posterior caries and placement of posterior composites.

Objectives

Describe identification and treatment options for posterior caries.

Appraise the tools and diagnostic criteria of visual–tactile methods of posterior caries diagnosis.

Outline diagnostic criteria of bitewing radiographs, and the benefits and limitations.

Consider composite selection and placement, including the determinants of colour and layering techniques.

Consider when to use direct, semi-direct or indirect techniques.

Practise preparation of cavities and placement of direct posterior composites in plastic phantom head teeth

Learning outcomes

Review diagnosis and management of posterior caries.

Communicate posterior caries treatment options, fees and procedures to patients.

Appraise restorative options for management of posterior caries

Improvement in technique of placement of posterior composite restorations
