DescriptionNHSE WT&E is responsible for educating and training the health workforce in England, helping to improve the quality of care by ensuring the workforce has the right numbers, skills, values, and behaviours to support patients. This includes developing a multi-professional primary dental care workforce able to meet the needs of current and future service requirements. All are welcome to come to hear from our new Regional Chief Dental Officer, Shab Shivji about the direction of travel in terms of dental commissioning and how to work effectively as a team to deliver NHS Dental Services including utilising Direct Access.

Aims

To discuss workforce - recruitment and retention, preparing for the future including new models for commissioning

  • Changes to the law and use of a dental therapists to their full scope of practice.

Objectives
  • Explore scope of practice and the use of skill mix within a dental practice, including future opportunities as a result of contract reform.
  • Highlight the structure, principles, rules and regulations and remuneration associated with working as a dental therapist within the NHS.
  • Showcase dental therapist foundation training and becoming a training practice.
Learning outcomes

The participants will be able to demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of the opportunities available through contract reform and workforce transformation including those that utilise dental therapists.
  • An understanding of the structure, principles, rules and regulations associated with working as a dental therapist within the NHS.
  • An awareness of where to find further information relating to the professional responsibility of a dental therapist, including permitted scope of practice, and rules regarding patients' direct access to treatment in accordance with current GDC standards.
  • A commitment to Continual Professional Development (CPD) through the regular completion (and subsequent recording) of CPD activities which update and improve knowledge and skills, to ensure evidence of capability and confidence to deliver these skills in everyday clinical practice.
