DescriptionThis day is a mixture of theory and hands-on training in the provision of full and partial dentures. The hands-on element takes place in the afternoon, using dental surveyors in partial denture design (please note that the dental surveyors will be shared 1 between 2 learners).

Mr Neil Nathwani is Associate Clinical Professor in restorative dentistry at the Eastman Dental Institute. He is the Deputy Programme Director of the Restorative Dental Practice MSc at the Eastman. Neil has worked in both NHS and private practice for the last 16 years and currently works in specialist practices where he accepts referrals from general dental practitioners. He was a specialist clinical tutor at Guys and St Thomas hospital for 3 years prior to his current UCL Eastman post. Neil played an active role in teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates. Neil currently teaches postgraduates on the MSc course as well as other short courses.

Aims

The aim of this course is to improve the quality of provision of full and partial dentures

Objectives

Determine patient dentofacial aesthetic requirements and the degree to which they can be met

Consider diagnosis, options and treatment planning based on evidence, through accurate interpretation of clinical findings

Describe how to manage patient expectations for replacing missing teeth

Clarify which aspects of dentures are within the NHS GDS contract and which are not

Practise the use of dental surveyors in partial denture design

Describe how to clearly communicate treatment options to patients

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session delegates should be able to:

appraise and carry out evidence-based construction and provision of dentures, including consideration of attachment systems

communicate treatment options and procedures in a clear manner
