Description | HANDS ON MOS Techniques for extraction, suturing and flap design. A one day course with presentations and hands-on sessions using pigs jaws/models in order to increase the confidence and knowledge of the participants, so that they may successfully undertake minor oral surgery procedures within their own practice settings. Case discussions are welcomed, but please ensure patient data is anonymized. |

Aims | The aim of the course is provide GDPs minor oral surgery skills. 1 To provide training in the theory and practice of minor oral surgery for the GDP, including patient assessment and selection, care planning and instrument and surgery set-up. 2 To discuss the management of pre-operative and post-operative complications associated with dento-alveolar surgery |
Objectives | Objectives To demonstrate the range of minor oral surgery procedures that can be safely undertaken in general practice including principles of flap design, tooth sectioning safe bone removal and suturing, so as to aid surgical removal of fractured teeth, uncomplicated third molars and root removal. |
Learning outcomes | Learning outcomes By the end of the course, learners should be able to: 1 Describe the fundamental principles of care planning and patient management for safe and effective hard and soft tissue surgery, in general dental practice. 2 Identify risk and manage complications in oral surgery, and understand when and how to refer onwards. 3 Demonstrate and carry out the steps involved in minor oral surgery procedures, so as to gain confidence in removing teeth and roots in a safe and effective manner, and reduce dento-alveolar referrals to secondary care. 4 Outline strategies for managing the risk of complications/emergencies, so as to increase predictability and effective outcomes for patients, and minimise the risk of complaints and performing dento-alveolar surgery in general dental practice.To demonstrate the range of minor oral surgery procedures that can be safely undertaken in general practice including principles of flap design, tooth sectioning safe bone removal and suturing, so as to aid surgical removal of fractured teeth, uncomplicated third molars and root removal. |
