DescriptionEscalating numbers of people are experiencing dementia. This ECPD activity is designed to promote dementia awareness and the special knowledge, approach and skills required of the dental team when supporting people with dementia. This course is intended for the whole dental team.
Additional information

Katy is a former Senior Dental Officer with Berkshire Community Dental Service. She was the project lead for the dementia awareness film “The Appointment” and currently Chair of the national Dementia Friendly Dentistry Group dedicated to the development of resources to support the provision of dental care for people with dementia. Katy represents dentistry on the Dementia Workforce Advisory Group and is working within Thames Valley and Wessex to support the development of dementia friendly dental care environments. She is Involved in projects to improve oral health for people living in residential care home and hospital settings. As part of this work, she helped develop the E-Learning Improving Mouth Care which is free to access on E- Learning for Health. She is currently working with the London Memory Clinic Network to promote referral to a dentist at the time of first diagnosis and is a member of the promoting the importance of oral health as an active member of the CQC Oral Health in Care Homes External Advisory Group.

This course is suitable for the entire Dental Team.

Aims

The course aims to familiarize learners with recognizing and understanding dementia. with focus on a greater awareness of dementia and confidence to support patients with dementia and also to enable learners to signpost patients and carers to appropriate support. It forms the basis of the fulfilling the training requirements to participate in the 'Working Towards Dementia Friendly Dental Practice' in Wessex.

Objectives

The overall aim is aligned with Government health policy that enables older people to remain independent for longer by providing preventative oral healthcare and access to treatment that is appropriate for the individual. The course will provide an overview of programmes for dementia friendly dentistry.

· Provide an update of existing and planned training programmes relating to oral health and dementia, how these dovetail with existing dementia resources and how to access them

· Gain insight into the viewpoint of someone living with dementia and the issues relating to providing their dental care including ethico-legal and safeguarding perspectives.

· Discover help and tips on how to treat people with dementia including modification of the practice environment and patient management.

· Opportunity for feedback, to share ideas and good practice

Learning outcomes

The participant will be able to:

Explain what is meant by the term dementia and what actions individuals can take to reduce their risk of dementia, or to delay onset.

Demonstrate recognition of the needs of those with dementia so as to provide safe, dignified and compassionate care.

Make adjustments to practice to support older people including those with dementia by assisting the development of supportive care environments.

This course covers the GDC outcomes A, B, C and D.
