Description | This course is intended to create an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of all the members of the dental team to ensure that safe sedation is provided. The training is supported by a mentoring programme to allow participants to practice and enhance their skills. This course is accredited and quality assured by the Sedation Training Accreditation Committee, Dental Faculties of Royal Colleges of Surgeons and The Royal College of Anaesthetists. |

Aims | - To provide training in inhalation sedation for all members of the dental team

Objectives | - To provide a broad theoretical understanding of the concept of nitrous oxide inhalation sedation and its safe delivery within a dental setting.
- To provide practical training in the safe use of nitrous oxide inhalation sedation, covering safety checks, administration, recovery and discharge.
- To increase the number of staff able to assist with and deliver inhalation sedation.

Learning outcomes | On completion of training, the trainee in Nitrous Oxide inhalation sedation will: - Understand the causes and recognise the signs and symptoms of dental anxiety.
- Appreciate the spectrum of techniques available to manage anxiety.
- Understand and be able to describe the anatomy and physiology relevant to the use of inhalation sedation in dentistry.
- Understand the pharmokinetics and pharmodynamics of Nitrous Oxide.
- Understand how patients are assessed, selected and consented for inhalation sedation
- Be able to identify, assemble and carry out safety checks for all equipment used for inhalational sedation.
- Be able to recognise and manage sedation related emergencies.
- Be able to assess suitability for discharge and deliver appropriate discharge information.
- Be aware of the current guidelines and policies (local and national) that govern the delivery of inhalation sedation.
- Understand their professional responsibility to continue their professional development relevant to the sedation technique practised.
