DescriptionThis evening is entirely devoted to Dental Nurses and Student Dental Nurses. These monthly meetings have been set up for Dental Nurses in the south region (Ox/Bucks/Berks/Hamps/I.O.W) to give Dental Nurses an ability to network and share ideas through open discussion, support their wellbeing, plus be empowered to progress and further their career if they wish to do so. This will be delivered via Webinar. Amberley Lewis talks about the important role Dental Nurses play in helping with Special Care patients and some of the tools available to aid assessment of Oral Health and Treatment. Following this will be an open forum and peer review discussion chaired by our guest speaker and the Tutor facilitating. GDC outcomes C & D.

Amberley Lewis currently works a Dental Nurse for Oxfordshire CDS, she is post qualified in Sedation, Special Care and Oral Health, and currently at university studying to be a Learning Disability Nurse.

Aims

The aim of this session is to give delegates a better understanding of what a learning disability is.

Discuss some conditions of people with a learning disability and how this affects their oral health.

Objectives

To give delegates a basic understanding of how to best support patients chairside with learning disabilities.

To understand what simple dental aids are out there to support people with a learning disability.

To demonstrate simple signs for communication with non verbal patients.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session the delegate will have a clearer idea of role the dental nurse has to play in supporting those  dental patients with learning disabilities with their Oral Health and treatment.
