Aims

Overall aim:

To improve the practical application of legal and ethical frameworks as they apply to dental practice and patient care.

Specific aim:

To increase learners’ ability to develop strategies to manage risks related to dental law and ethics.

Objectives

To update the dental team in legal and ethical issues and documentation within the provision of dental care

1. To review the requirements of the GDC Standards.

2. To examine dental care and practice from professionally relevant legal and ethical standpoints.

3. To examine the principles of ethical behaviour relevant to dentistry.

Learning outcomes

Following this course learners should be able to:

 

• Explain the difference between legal and ethical issues

• Explain what the GDC is and what it does

• Understand the importance of keeping extensive records for each patient and what constitutes proper record keeping

• Discuss the key information regarding Confidentiality, Consent and Complaints

• Obtain information to enable up to date policies/documents to be kept in your place of work

• Understand the importance of the GDC standards
