Aims

The aim of this course is to develop the learners’ ability to recognise, assess and manage medical emergencies - adults and paediatrics - in the primary care dental setting. It will update the members of the dental team in the most common medical emergencies likely to happen in the clinical and non-clinical environment, to get delegates to work together to be able to confidently deal with these emergencies in an appropriate manner.

Objectives

Objectives: By the end of the session you should be able to-

• Recognise the importance of taking a detailed medical history

• Recognise the legalities of not taking a detailed medical history

• State what we need to know, to deal with a medical emergency in the dental surgery

• List the signs and symptoms and causes of the most common medical emergencies likely to happen in the dental surgery

• Explain the actions to be taken should a medical emergency happen

• List the drugs needed for each medical emergency and describe their mode of action

• Describe the records that need to be kept in the event of a medical emergency

Learning outcomes

1. Identify severe medical events which require urgent hospital admission.

2. Recognise, manage and provide basic and immediate life support for medical emergencies, in line with UK Resuscitation Council guidelines.

3. Identify, prescribe and administer - where appropriate - emergency drugs correctly.

4. Facilitate a team approach to medical emergencies so as to deal promptly with uncommon but potentially tragic events.
