With the significant growth in incidents since the pandemic and cost of living crisis we will identify the key areas of potential conflict and how attention to listening, showing empathy and open, honest & clear speech (i.e. effective communication) can help to defuse and resolve many issues. Nigel Faiers, a qualified trainer and member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has over 35 years experience in the care, support and healthcare sectors. In 2003 Nigel formed Faiers Training Limited and moved from managing a large portfolio of care and supported housing to delivering training and consultancy for the social care & healthcare sectors. Nigel has been delivering training on Safeguarding Adults from abuse since 2003 and the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) since 2006 for staff at all levels both for his own company and on behalf of organisations such as the Social Care Institute for Excellence. Nigel believes in training that is both professional and practical. Nigel has also organised Managing Aggressive Behaviour training for over twenty years and a few years ago took over the delivery of these sessions.

Aims

Discuss the warning signs of aggressive/challenging behaviour and consider using de-escalation techniques.

Objectives

Appreciating different perspectives: Why patients exhibit aggressive or challenging behaviours (including warning signs of a problem)

Understanding and responding to patients using empathy

Avoiding escalation by careful communications; keeping calm

How we sometimes unintentionally argue with distressed patients and alternative ways of responding

Learning outcomes

At the end of this session delegates will have learnt how to avoid adverse outcomes due to challenging behaviours from patients.
