Nigel Faiers, a qualified trainer and member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has over 35 years experience in the care, support and healthcare sectors. In 2003 Nigel formed Faiers Training Limited and moved from managing a large portfolio of care and supported housing to delivering training and consultancy for the social care & healthcare sectors. Nigel has been delivering training on Safeguarding Adults from abuse since 2003 and the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) since 2006 for staff at all levels both for his own company and on behalf of organisations such as the Social Care Institute for Excellence. Nigel believes in training that is both professional and practical. Nigel has also organised Managing Aggressive Behaviour training for over twenty years and a few years ago took over the delivery of these sessions.

To explain the relevance of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) to dentistry and to help identify the key elements within the Act that impact on dental practice.

To create an understanding of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) as it relates to dentistry.

By the end of the sessions delegates will be in a position to identify the five core principles upon which the Act is built.

Understand how to assess a patient's capacity to consent to dental examination/treatment.

Understand how to make best interests decisions when the patient lacks capacity to consent. Understand the importance of advanced decisions to refuse treatment, and the role of Attorneys, Deputies and Independent Mental Capacity Advocates. (IMCA).
