Aims | To highlight the opportunities available to dental therapists through contract reform and the workforce transformation proposed by the Advancing Dental Care project. |
Objectives | - Provide details of the new General Dental Council guidance for Enhanced Continuing Professional Development including the plan, do, reflect, record model and the requirement for an individual Personal Development Plan based on current field of practice
- Highlight the structure, principles, rules and regulations and remuneration associated with working as a dental therapist within the NHS.
- Explore scope of practice and the use of skill mix within a dental practice, including future opportunities as a result of contract reform.

Learning outcomes | The participants will be able to demonstrate: - Knowledge of the opportunities available to dental therapists through contract reform and the workforce transformation proposed by the Advancing Dental Care project.
- A thorough understanding of the professional responsibility of a dental therapist within and outside the NHS, including permitted scope of practice, and rules regarding patients' direct access to treatment provided by other dental professionals in accordance with current GDC standards.
- A commitment to Continual Professional Development (CPD) through the regular completion (and subsequent recording) of CPD activities which update and improve knowledge and skills, and the incorporation of these skills into everyday practice.
- An understanding of the charging structure relating to treatment provided for patients in general practice and other relevant clinical environments, including NHS dentistry, private fee per item and capitations schemes.
- An understanding of the structure, principles, rules and regulations associated with working as a dental therapist within the NHS.
- Knowledge of the different remuneration systems for dental services and Contracts and Agreements, as they relate to salaried and self-employed professionals.
- Appreciation of the requirement for membership of a professional indemnity organisation in accordance with current GDC standards.
