3 To discuss the selection criteria for referral guidelines to assist in clinical decision making for urgent referrals.

4 To discuss how the team can work together to prevent oral cancer and improve early detection.

5 To discuss the best way of communicating to the patient what you have found in their mouth and why you are referring them.

Learning outcomes

1 List the risk factors of oral cancer and identify patients at increased risk so as to present them with risk reduction strategies appropriate to their needs.

2 List potentially malignant conditions and describe the ways the cancer can present clinically.

3 Use selection criteria for referral guidelines to assist in clinical decision making for urgent referrals.

4 To communicate with the patient  at the appropriate level, with clear information about oral cancer screening arrangements.
