Description | This course is suitable to the whole dental team. Staff who work in practice should receive appropriate safeguarding training every 3 years as a minimum. This course is designed to meet statutory safeguarding training requirements as well as promoting dementia awareness and knowledge to support people with dementia. |

Aims | To empower individuals to make safeguarding their business, and support people with dementia and their carers. 1 To protect children and young people fromabuse. 2 To protect adults at risk of abuse or neglect. 3 To improve care for people with dementia. |
Objectives | 1 To explain safeguarding and protection as it applies to children and young people. 2 To explain the principles of adult safeguarding and who is vulnerable. 3 To discuss the different types of abuse and neglect and the signs that they are happening, as well as data protection issues relating to information sharing for safeguarding purposes. 4 To discuss the signs of dementia and its impact over the course of the illness. 5 To consider the needs of patients affected by dementia and their families and carers. |
Learning outcomes | Following this course leaners should be able to: 1 Identify when a child or young person may be at risk or harm. 2 Demonstrate effective use of the safeguarding principles to consider the wellbeing of adults who may be at risk of abuse, neglect of exploitation due to the actions(or lack of action) by another person. 3 To recognise the signs and indicators of abuse and neglect and manage disclosures safely so as to share information correctlyto protect those at risk. 4 Explain what is meant by dementia and why early diagnosis is important to the individual , families and society. |
