Aims

The overall aim of this hands-on course is to improve the predictability of endodontics. A specific aim is to increase learners’ skills in modern endodontic preparation and obturation techniques.

Objectives

1. To discuss diagnosis, treatment planning, and decision making in endodontics, and to recognise the importance of radiographs in endodontics.

2. To demonstrate  how to create effective access cavities, and to practise hand and rotary preparation with contemporary nickel titanium systems

3. To practise filling the root canal using cold and warm guttapercha techniques

4. To review (i) the restoration of a tooth following endodontic treatment. (ii) prognosis and follow up (iii) discuss single versus multiple visits

2. To assess how these can be overcome with the use of modern preparation techniques.

3. To assess how these can be minimised through modern obturation techniques.

4. To consider the factors that significantly impact endodontic success rates.

Learning outcomes

Following this course learners should be able to:

1. Assess and evaluate whether a tooth can be root treated and restored, so as to increase endodontic success.

2. Effectively prepare root canals for obturation, and relate theory and practice so as to improve predictability of clinical treatment and outcomes when saving the tooth with root treatment.

3. Practise obturation of root canals, and relate theory and practice so as to improve predictability of clinical treatment and outcomes in endodontic treatment.

4. Evaluate the clinical risk when deciding whether endodontics is appropriate or not
