Aims | Aims & Objectives: To improve the confidence of trainees, in understanding the NHS banding system and claiming course of treatment. To improve the confidence of trainees in discussing NHS and private treatment options with patients To improve the competence of FDs in obtaining valid and informed consent from their patients for treatment and referrals (both NHS and private) |
Learning outcomes | Clinical 2.5 Obtain valid informed consent from the patient/ parent/ guardian before starting treatment, explaining all relevant options and costs in a manner they can understand, and ensure the patients' consent remains valid at all stages of the treatment. Clinical 2.6 Knows which items of treatment fall within NHS primary care dental care regulations *and any which do not, and can discuss the consequences of this with the patient in a manner he/ she can understand. *relevant to the country of training (and that these may differ) Clinical 2.12 Is able to present to the patient a complete range of treatment options, explaining risks, benefits and costs. Clinical 3.7 Provide preventive education for patients and carers in a manner they can understand, and in which encourages self-care and motivation, and check their understanding of their individual care plan. Clinical 10.2 Evaluate the restorative prognosis for individual teeth and relate this to the overall treatment plan and patient's aims and expectations. Clinical 10.5 Restore carious teeth to form, function and appearance using a wide range of restorative materials. Clinical 10.9 Use a range of materials and techniques in the application of appropriate indirect restorations, with appropriate considerations, and refer as appropriate. Communication 12.01 Increase patients' awareness and understanding of treatment options and procedures by careful explanation and the use of effective communication skills. Communication 12.03 Present questions and information to the patient (or carer) in a clear, concise and understandable manner. Professionalism 16.01 Always puts patients' interests before their own, or those of any colleague, business or organisation. Professionalism 16.09 Ensures patients (& carers) are provided with comprehensive information about options, choices and cost for treatment, both in practice literature and websites. Management & Leadership 20.04 Can describe in appropriate detail the principles of obtaining valid consent for patients of all ages and capacities. |
