Description | A three hour course for the entire practice team, demonstrating the information required to produce complete patient clinical records. |
Additional information | This course is intended for the whole dental practice team: Dentists, Dental Nurses, Therapists, Hygienists, Clinical Dental Technicians and Dental Technicians. 09.30 - 10.00: Registration The educational programme starts at 10.00. If driving, please allow plenty of time to find the venue and park your vehicle. Traffic in Southampton does not flow freely during the rush hour. The Education Suite is signposted by an abundance of notices from the Main Entrance. Refreshments will be available from 09.30; delegates are recommended to gather ample snacks and drinks to lubricate their time in the lecture room. The hospital car park fee for the day is £6.00. Aims | The aims of this course are to improve the Whole Dental Practice Team's ability to obtain a detailed history from the patient and perform a comprehensive oral health assessment (or urgent care assessment). |
Objectives | 1. To provide information about history taking and record keeping in line with current national guidance. 2. To relate the requirements of a comprehensive extra-oral and intra-oral examination suitable for the clothed patient and make an accurate record. 3. To detail how to provide patients with personally tailored advice on their oral health status including treatment options and the transfer of responsibility for patient self-care. |
Learning outcomes | Following this course learners should be able to: 1. Describe and summarise the key issues relating to history taking and record keeping 2. Explain and demonstrate theoretical competence in conducting extra-oral and intra-oral examinations 3. List the four main causes of poor oral health (dental caries, periodontal disease, tooth surface loss, conditions affecting the soft tissues of the mouth) and identify the degree of risk of these conditions occurring, or of the conditions progressing |
