Overall aims:

1. To improve the predictability of restoring the root-filled tooth in general dental practice.

2. To enable practitioners to decide when a post should be used to restore the root-filled tooth.

Specific aims:

1. To increase practitioners’ skills in restoring the root-filled tooth.

2. To provide practitioners with an opportunity to practice clinical skills.

3. To increase practitioners’ confidence.

Objectives

1. To provide criteria to help identify predictably restorable root-filled teeth, including those requiring a post.

2. To consider the different types of posts and designs available, and when and how they should be used for optimum results.

3. To consider materials available for core construction and demonstrate their use.

4. To explore the utilisation of indirect or direct restorations to restore the root-filled tooth.

5. To provide training in straightforward techniques for indirect restorative tooth preparation.

Learning outcomes

Following this course learners should be able to:

1. Critically assess the level of predictability involved in restoring the root-filled tooth prior to placing the definitive restoration.

2. Choose the ideal post for the particular clinical situation.

3. Demonstrate ability in placing posts and using core materials.

4. Select the ideal restorative approach for the particular clinical situation.

5. Demonstrate competence in preparing teeth for indirect restorative care using model teeth.
