DescriptionThis course is one of a number of courses designed to provide an Introduction to primary care NHS dentistry – essential for dentists undertaking Dental Foundation Training by Equivalence (DFTQ). This course is also suitable for other dentists who are new to the NHS, dentists returning to NHS practice, and any dental professional interested in learning more about the featured topics.

Aims

Specific aims:

1. To improve the practical application of the principles, rules and regulations associated with working as a dentist in the NHS.

2. To prepare performers undertaking dental foundation training by equivalence – and their educational supervisors – for the training process.

Objectives

1. To provide training on the NHS Charges Regulations, including the pitfalls and controls.

2. To review NICE guidance on oral and dental health.

3. To analyse the care pathway approach.

4. To provide information and advice on dental foundation training by equivalence and the training portfolio.

5. To discuss personal and professional development planning.

Learning outcomes

Following this course learners should be able to:

1. Rationalise the NHS Charges Regulations and mitigate the risk of falling foul of dental service regulators.

2. Use evidence-based guidance in clinical decision making.

3. Use the care pathway approach to encourage patients to take responsibility for protecting and maintaining their own oral health.

4. Explain the dental foundation training by equivalence process and summarise the evidence required to demonstrate equivalence against the Professional, Managerial, Clinical and Communication domains of the Foundation Dentist curriculum.

5. Demonstrate recognition of the lifelong learning process.
