Aims

Nowadays, people are living longer and retaining most of their teeth to a later stage of their lives. Healthy individual and aged population, however, seem to start experiencing new trend of dental disease apart from the well-known primary diseases like caries and periodontitis. Tooth wear and loss of tooth tissues due to physiological, pathological or iatrogenic aetiological factors may present some challenges to GDPs in terms of diagnosis and management at primary dental care setting. Therefore, by the end of this course candidates will be able to:

1- Develop better understanding of the aetiology and management of different types of tooth wear cases.

2- Discuss and put forward a comprehensive assessment algorithm as part of a holistic treatment planning approach.

3- Develop set of clinical skills, which are needed for effective management of localized and generalized tooth wear.

5- Have a better insight and understanding of potential risks factors and problems associated with different treatment modalities.

Objectives

• To acknowledge the principles of occlusal management in tooth wear cases.

• To understand the implications of altering the occlusal scheme in patients with reduced OVD and loss of inter-occlusal space.

• To understand the clinical principles in the management of tooth wear.

• To develop a set of clinical skills in the management of localized and generalized tooth wear.

Learning outcomes

• Be familiar with the principles of restoring localised and generalised worn dentition with direct and indirect restorations.

• Acknowledge the differences between direct and indirect restorations and their clinical longevity in restoring worn down teeth.
