SubjectOral Surgery
DescriptionInteractive evidence-based modular training for GDPs & dentists with a special interest in Minor Oral Surgery, which includes training in most of the enhanced skills needed for Level 2 accreditation. This is an opportunity for dentists to learn and practise the principles and techniques of minor oral surgery procedures, designed for the busy practitioner, with 3.5 training days over 4 months. Four modules cover the main aspects of dentoalveolar surgery performed in general practice, including 3 days of intensive hands on training on pig or sheep jaws: Day 1 is a morning webinar- an interactive theory session with case discussions and seminar. (The link will be sent by 17:00 on 27/09/23). Days 2,3 & 4 are a mixture of lectures and hands-on practice in the skills room. Please ensure you can attend all 4 dates before booking. Dr Kashif Hafeez has Membership and Fellowship of the  Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, a Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, and a post graduate certificate in Medical and Dental education from Oxford Brookes. Kashif has a special interest in Oral Surgery and Dental Implantology, and is in practice in the Cotswolds. He has been a post graduate Dental Foundation trainer for Oxford Deanery and is a current examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland & the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh). Kashif acts as an expert & advisor to the General Dental Council. He teaches Oral surgery and Implantology at the Masters programme of BPP University, and lectures nationally and internationally on Oral surgery & Dental Implantology, including presenting his scientific work at various international conferences. In addition, Kashif serves as Editorial Board member for Porodental CPD and is a visiting Oral surgery Professor in Pakistan. He has a number of international publications. In 2013, he was honoured with the Dentist of the year award by APPS UK.LINK

The John Lister PGC is at Entrance 4 (SL3 6LY) Maternity/ Paeds of Wexham Park Hospital, and NOT the main entrance- go straight ahead to park and walk to a low brown bricked 60s type building in a hollow on the right as you drive in; you need to pay for parking- you can pay by card but not Amex nor Apple pay etc. NB It can take over 30 minutes to cross Slough from the M4 junction 6. If arriving by train, please allow at least 30 minutes travel from Slough station. There is a local, bus but taxi will be far quicker.

Tea, coffee, fruit and snacks will be available. Lunch may be brought, or bought in the adjacent main hospital building.

Aims

The aim of this course is to enable dentists to improve knowledge and skills in the principles and techniques of minor oral surgical procedures.

Objectives

Day 1 (Morning-only webinar, delivered via MS Teams):

Describe how to select appropriate cases and plan the best treatment options for patients. 

Outline basic principles of Minor Oral Surgery.

Consider medical problems that can affect treatment choices.

Days 2, 3 & 4:

Describe and demonstrate basic concepts of Minor Oral Surgical procedures, including surgical extractions, retained roots and apical surgery.

Practise the steps involved in performing the most common minor oral surgical procedures including flap design, bone removal, tooth sectioning and suturing

Describe appropriate management of dento-alveolar trauma & complications.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

Identify criteria for case selection, assessment and treatment planning for Minor Oral Surgery cases.

Appraise and assess significant medical conditions and the management of medically compromised patients, including patients on bisphosphonates and those on emerging new medications that can affect  treatment plans.

Define and demonstrate basic principles of minor oral surgery: flap design, bone removal and suturing

Perform the most common minor oral surgical procedures: surgical extractions, removal of retained roots & impacted teeth.

Manage patients who need wisdom teeth removal & apical surgery

Recall and demonstrate the theory and practical management of soft tissue management including biopsy

Recognise surgical complications and plan appropriate management of these.
