DescriptionStaff who have any contact with children should receive appropriate safeguarding training every 3 years as a minimum so as to recognise child maltreatment and know exactly what to do if they have concerns. Dental professionals working with adults should receive safeguarding adults training every 3 years as a minimum. All staff have a key role in preventing harm or abuse occurring and for taking action when concerns arise. This CPD activity will refresh learners’ knowledge and understanding of adult safeguarding responsibilities.

Aims

This core course aims to meet statutory training requirements so as to ensure staff are up-to-date with the issues surrounding child protection. A specific aim is to clarify the roles and responsibilities of the whole dental team in promoting the safety and well-being of children at risk of abuse.

To reduce or, ideally, prevent the risk of significant harm from abuse and exploitation of adults.

1. To simultaneously support people to take control of their own lives by making informed choices.

2. To clarify the roles and responsibilities of the whole dental team in protecting adults at risk of abuse or neglect.

Objectives

1. To provide information about the different forms of child abuse and neglect, including what constitutes child maltreatment.

2. To discuss how to be an advocate for a child or young person.

3. To explain the potential impact of a parent/carer’s physical and mental health on the well-being and development of a child or young person, including possible speech, language and communication needs.

4. To explain the impact of domestic violence, the risks associated with the internet and online social networking, the importance of children’s rights in the safeguarding/child protection context, and key statutory and non-statutory guidance and legislation.

5. To provide training in best practice documentation and record-keeping, and data protection issues relating to information sharing for safeguarding purposes.

In regard to safeguarding adults:

1. To explain adult safeguarding and who is vulnerable.

2. To discuss the different types of abuse and neglect and the signs that they are happening.

3. Explain the principles of adult safeguarding.

4. To review national legislation as it relates to adult safeguarding, including the Care Act 2014 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005.

5. To explain how to get help and support to report abuse and neglect.

Learning outcomes

Following this course learners should be able to:

1. Recognise and outline the different forms of child maltreatment, and the signs and indicators of abuse and neglect, so as to identify when a child or young person may be at risk of harm.

2. Demonstrate ability to use referral mechanisms and share information appropriately, including who to contact, where to access advice and how to report.

3. Demonstrate an ability to recognise and describe a significant event in child protection/safeguarding to the most appropriate professional or local team.

4. Use case scenarios to illustrate disclosure and information sharing, and accurate documentation of concerns.

In addition, for safeguarding adults

1. Identify adults who may be at risk of abuse, neglect or exploitation due to the actions (or lack of action) by another person.

2. Demonstrate effective recognition of the signs and indicators of abuse and neglect.

3. Demonstrate effective use of the safeguarding principles to consider the wellbeing of people with care or support needs at risk of abuse or neglect.

4. Explain the legal issues relevant to adult safeguarding, including consent and assessing capacity.

5. Manage disclosures safely and share information correctly to identify people at risk and put steps in place to help prevent abuse or neglect.
