Aims

Overall aim:

To protect children and young people from abuse.

Specific aim:

To clarify the roles and responsibilities of the whole dental team in promoting the safety and well-being of children at risk of abuse.

Objectives

1. To explain safeguarding and child protection.

2. To discuss the various types of abuse and neglect and the signs that they are happening.

3. To discuss how to ask questions if you suspect a child is being abused and how to report concerns.

4. To review national legislation, policies and guidance on how the child protection system should work.

5. To provide training in best practice documentation and record-keeping, and data protection issues relating to information sharing for safeguarding purposes.

Learning outcomes

1. Identify when a child or young person may be at risk of harm.

2. Demonstrate effective recognition of the signs and indicators of abuse.

3. Manage disclosures safely and share information correctly to identify children and young people at risk and protect them.

4. Explain the legal issues relevant to safeguarding and child protection.

5. Keep good up-to-date records of concerns and actions taken so as to identify causes for concern at an early stage, and provide evidence of robust and effective safeguarding policy and practice.
