DescriptionThe Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 (IRR99) and the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure Regulations 2000 (IR(ME)R 2000) govern the use of ionising radiation in the UK. The GDC recommends that all Dentists and DCPs complete at least 5 hours of CPD in radiography and radiation protection every CPD cycle. As such, this course satisfies Schedule 2 of the IRMER regulations for operators involved in X-raying patients, as well as core CPD requirements for the whole dental team. Learners should be aware Guidance Notes for Dental Practitioners on the Safe Use of X-ray equipment (DH, 2001) and Selection Criteria for Dental Radiography (FGDP (UK) RCS, 2013) are key reference guidelines/publications and essential reading for all dental professionals before and after the course. The content of the course is specified in the 2001 Guidance Notes.

St. Mary's Hospital, Newport is easily accessible by public transport from Cowes and Ryde. On site visitors parking facility available 4-6 hours rate is £3.90 Staff with parking permits pay a reduced rate of £0.65 for the day and can use any designated staff car parking area. The Education Centre lecture rooms are air-conditioned with IT-Data projector and screen facilities.

Aims

The aim of this course is to provide continuing education and training in all aspects of dental radiology as part of life-long learning for dentists, or DCPs entitled to take responsibility for an individual medical exposure – practitioners and operators, who carry out all or part of the practical aspects associated with a radiographic examination.

Objectives

1. To explain the principles of radiation physics and the risks of ionising radiation in dental radiology.

2. To consider radiation doses in dental radiography and factors affecting dose.

3. To discuss the statutory responsibilities for IRMER practitioners and operators by examining current UK legislation and guidelines governing the use of ionising radiation in dentistry.

4. To consider the principles of radiation protection.

5. To provide information on the requirements of quality assurance systems, medico-legal dental radiology, record keeping and clinical audit.

Learning outcomes

1. Describe the fundamentals of radiation physics, and the risk/benefits and biological effects of radiation, so as to demonstrate knowledge of hazard associated with exposure.

2. Summarise the factors affecting radiation doses received by patients and staff in dental radiology, and outline attendant quality assurance systems, so as to demonstrate theoretical ability to minimise risks and ensure the consistent quality of radiographs.

3. Outline general points of current UK legislation and guidance governing the use of ionising radiation in dentistry, so as to demonstrate awareness of statutory responsibilities.

4. Summarise the principles of radiation protection, so as to demonstrate theoretical ability regarding the safe use of radiographs in dental practice.

5. Recognise and describe key aspects of radiography quality assurance framework, so as to implement effective strategies in own practice.
