| Description | Safeguarding Adults: Dental professionals working with adults should receive safeguarding adults training every 3 years as a minimum. All staff have a key role in preventing harm or abuse occurring and for taking action when concerns arise. This CPD activity will refresh learners’ knowledge and understanding of adult safeguarding responsibilities. Dementia is a global issue. Escalating numbers of people are experiencing dementia in many countries. This CPD activity is designed to promote dementia awareness and the special knowledge, approach and skills required of the dental team when supporting people with dementia. Child Protection: Staff who have any contact with children should receive appropriate safeguarding training every 3 years as a minimum. This course is designed to meet statutory training requirements and keep staff up-to-date with the issues surrounding safeguarding and child protection. |

| Aims | To reduce or, ideally, prevent the risk of significant harm from abuse and exploitation. Specific aim: 1. To simultaneously support people to take control of their own lives by making informed choices. 2. To clarify the roles and responsibilities of the whole dental team in protecting adults at risk of abuse or neglect.
Overall aim: To familiarise learners with recognising and understanding dementia. Specific aims: 1. To increase learners’ confidence to support patients affected by dementia. 2. To enable learners to signpost patients and carers to appropriate support.
Overall aim: To protect children and young people from abuse. Specific aim: To clarify the roles and responsibilities of the whole dental team in promoting the safety and well-being of children at risk of abuse. |

| Learning outcomes | 1. Identify adults who may be at risk of abuse, neglect or exploitation due to the actions (or lack of action) by another person. 2. Demonstrate effective recognition of the signs and indicators of abuse and neglect. 3. Demonstrate effective use of the safeguarding principles to consider the wellbeing of people with care or support needs at risk of abuse or neglect. 4. Explain the legal issues relevant to adult safeguarding, including consent and assessing capacity. 5. Manage disclosures safely and share information correctly to identify people at risk and put steps in place to help prevent abuse or neglect.
1. Explain what is meant by the term dementia. 2. Explain what actions individuals can take to reduce their risk of dementia, or to delay onset. 3. Identify the early symptoms of dementia and why early diagnosis is important to the individual, families and society. 4. Demonstrate recognition of the needs of those with dementia so as to provide safe, dignified and compassionate care. 5. Outline the dental implications of dementia and plan rational appropriate dental care for people with dementia.
