DescriptionThis course will provide a comprehensive overview of tooth whitening techniques, shade taking and aesthetics (using manual and electronic techniques). Home and power bleaching procedures (including light activation and Lasers) will be considered and techniques will be practised using specially stained teeth. The course consists of an initial lecture followed by hands-on practical training for both the morning and afternoon sessions, and is intended for Dentists, Dental Nurses, Dental Hygienists, Dental Therapists and Dental Technician.

Registration is 09.00 to 09.30 with the educational programme starting at 09.30.  Lunch and refreshments are provided throughout the day (incl. in course fee) and the course finishes at 16.30

Directions - Exit the M1 at Junction 13 and follow signs marked A421 to Milton Keynes/Buckingham, as you enter the Milton Keynes roundabout, you will see a filling station on the right.  Take the 3rd exit, which is a continuation of the A421 and marked H8 Standing Way; follow signs to Buckingham.  Continue on this road - across all roundabouts - until you come to the hospital roundabout.  (You will see the hospital - a long cream building - on your right as you come across the double roundabout - the last roundabout before the hospital roundabout)

Turn right at the hospital roundabout into the hospital grounds.  Take first left and follow the road along to the multi-storey car park. The entrance to the centre is along the side of the Treatment Centre.  Parking in the multi-story car park 6-8 hrs £5 (charges may change).

Aims

The aim of this course is to provide continuing dental education in tooth discolouration and tooth whitening techniques.

Objectives

Describe and explain the causes of tooth discolouration so as to be able to correctly diagnose and manage discoloured teeth

Describe current tooth whitening techniques and the indications and contraindications for their use so as to be able to offer appropriate choices for patients

Explain and discuss legal issues and ethical dilemmas, including dealing with patients who are under 18 years of age, so as to contribute to patient safety

Provide information on the theory of, and practical hands-on experience of shade taking for in-surgery and laboratory- made restorations so as to develop skills in these techniques

Provide information on how to manage problems, including sensitivities, so as to better communicate with patients and improve outcomes

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, learners will :

be able to list and recognise the causes of tooth discolouration

understand  tooth whitening techniques & how to apply them, so as to be able to use these in practice

be able to recognise legal and ethical issues in tooth whitening techniques

understand the theory of shade taking, and have experience of taking shades with new systems

be able to manage problems associated with bleaching, and manage questions and concerns about dental bleaching
