Aims

To apply principles of periodontology in general dental practice

Learning outcomes

Evaluate the periodontal tissues and idagnose a patient's periodontal condition.  Measure and record periodontal indices accurately, according to current guidelines.  Integarte periodontal findings into the patient's comprehensive treatment plan and understand how the periodontal status of the patient will impact on their treatment plan.  Establish a prognosis for individual periodontally involved teeth and inform the patient of this.

Prescribe, deliver and monitor the use of antimicrobial agents, where appropriate, to aid the treatment of periodontal diseases.  Assess the requirement for and perform oral hygiene instruction, scaling and mechanical root debridement.  Evaluate the results of periodontal treatment and establish and monitor a suitable recall maintenance programme for patients.  Assess the requirement for specialised advice and/or periodontal treatment and refer the patient appropriately.

Is able to identify correctly and demonstrate understanding of the aetiology of a patient's periodontal problems, and the ability to educate the patient in these matters and the prevention of disease.  Understands the role of dental care professionals in periodontal therapy and is able to prescribe treatment.   the role of periodontal surgery in the mangement of gingival overgrowth and advanced periodontal disease.  the conservative management of gingival recession.
